Mary Grabowska ND, LM, LAc has been an Oregon licensed Naturopathic Physician since 1993 and an acupuncturist and Washington licensed midwife since 1994. She especially enjoys working with the mother’s energy to stimulate the onset of labor. She teaches midwifery and neonatology classes at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Her first love is attending women at their homebirths and watching the pure, innocent babes emerge into their mama’s arms.

Mary’s course for the conference will focus on the newborn and conditions particular to the neonatal period. We will review common newborn conditions and how to reassure new parents regarding their significance. Participants will lean about unusual complications of the neonate as well as the management of these complications.

Root Medicine: Applying the Wisdom of the Female Body to Birth and Mothering

Tami Kent, MSPT, is a Women’s Health Physical Therapist, mother of three, and author. With advanced training in multiple bodywork techniques and the ability to read energetic patterns of the body, Tami provides a bridge between modern medicine and traditional women’s wisdom. She is lead author and researcher for a scientific study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and shares her pioneering approach to restoring balance in the female pelvis in her book, Wild Feminine: Finding Power, Spirit, and Joy in the Root of the Female Body.

Tami’s course for the conference will introduce her integrative approach to pelvic care. In a practice she calls Holistic Pelvic Care ™, Tami physically and energetically realigns a woman’s pelvic bowl. A valuable physical medicine, Holistic Pelvic Care can address the imbalances in the root to alleviate a variety of pelvic symptoms, enhance core vitality, and assist post-partum healing. Tami will share her knowledge of this powerful potential in the root of the female body through keen insights and fascinating case studies.

Facilitating a Biodynamic Birth Experience

Holly Scholles, MA, CPM, LDM, is an anthropologist, midwife and president of Birthingway College of Midwifery in Portland, Oregon. She has been attending homebirths since 1978. She currently sits on the Oregon Board of Direct Entry Midwifery, the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council, and the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care. She is the Education Chair for the Midwives Alliance of North America. Her two amazing Children were born at home.

Holly’s workshop will review the underlying principles of the Biodynamic Model, including the impact of oxytocin, catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrin) and other hormones on the course of labor. Specific protocols for implementing Biodynamic birth practices will be discussed, including creating a biodynamic labor and delivery environment, working with the Ferguson reflex, optimizing the fetal ejection response, delaying cord clamping and separations, and utilizing physiologic management principles in the immediate postpartum.


2:30-3:30 Molly Linton
Unusual Complications of Pregnancy

Molly Linton, ND, LM is a Naturopathic Physician and Licensed Midwife who has been in private family practice for almost 25 years. Her background includes being the Dean of Naturopathic Medicine and Chair of the Midwifery Department at Bastyr University where she taught for 20 years both academically and clinically. She has extensively lectured throughout the country and written many articles on natural Childbirth, Pediatrics and Naturopathic Medicine. She is also the proud mother of two children, Brittany and Rodney, Jr.

Molly will present such complications as the dermatological diseases (e.g. herpes gestationis, melasma, popular dermatitis, pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy PUPPS); metabolic issues such as HELPP; unusual musculoskeletal issues. Her lecture will focus on a Naturopathic diagnostic triage and therapeutic plan based on Naturopathic principles. Botanical Medicine for Mothers and Babies: Cultivating Healthy Beginnings

Dr. Mary Bove obtained her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine and Midwifery Certification from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA. She received the Diploma of Phytotherapy/Herbal Medicine at the School of Phytotherapy in Great Britain. She served as a full-time faculty member at Bastyr University, in the departments of Botanical medicine and Naturopathic Midwifery. She is the author of the Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants and co-author of Herbs for Women’s Health. She lectures internationally and writes on the topics of botanical medicine, pediatrics and natural childbirth. Dr. Bove currently practices Naturopathic Family Medicine in Brattleboro, VT.

Mary will cover naturopathic and botanical tools used for building an optimal foundation of health for mother and baby during the gestational period, infancy and childhood. She will address botanical medicines used to cultivate wellness, optimal growth and development and for the treatment of illness. Botanical medicines will be discussed in terms of active constituents, pharmacological activity, recent clinical trials, safety and dosing. Special attention will be given to use of botanical medicines with infants and children.
